shakey head

Need recommendations on what to use for shake heads. Spinning reel or bait caster? Mono or flour? What is best and what is the best way to go? Heard different things but not really sure what to do.

Just trying to learn new things.

I'm no expert but this is what I do:

Very light shaky heads you have to use spinning gear.  That said, I dont use a lot of super light ones.  Most of the time i'm throwing a 1/4oz shaky head.  I use it on regular line, that said my line doesn't stretch as much as...lets say Berkley XL or XT.  I use a copolomer simular to P-Line. So, I dont use fluro all that much except as leaders sometimes. All the pros swear by it but it cost twice as much and doesn't last any longer than mono.  But if you did go with fluro you would feel the bottom better.  Anyways, I really like these shaky head hooks: http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Owner_Shaky_Ultrahead_4pk/descpage-OSUH.html
As far as baits, I have some smaller shaky head worms (real small, say 4")  that I'll use sometiimes but usually i'm using zoom trick worms or other long and skinny worms.

I know under 1/4 oz to use spinning mono floats so it might slow rate of fall. But is that enough or right or does it matter?

Another question was, what is best way to use a shakey head? Caught a slot at Harris by dragging and VERY slight pops while suspended. Is this right or just depends on what they want? Same goes for Texas rig. Drag or something else? Carolina rig I got. That's MY go to rig.

When I use shakey heads, I think of finesse fishing so I only use spinning outfits with them. I like using a 7' med action rod and I never go bigger than 10lb line. As far as working the lure, I usually do a few things. I will slow drag it n before I move it again I will shake the tip of my rod with the intention of not moving the weight but getting the worm to twitch. If that doesn't work, I will hop it just off the bottom. When it hits bottom again I will let it soak for a couple seconds then hop it again. If that doesn't work I will just drag it without any tip movement across the bottom and just let the current/movement of the drag do the work.

As far as worms go, I agree with Derrick. I normally use some type of straight tailed/finesse worm n try not to go bigger than a 6" worm. Very rarely I will try a curly tailed worm. Although I do wanna get some of those punkin' Ed(or equivalent) n try a magnum style worm/shakey head technique.

I just started Shaky Head fishing this year and until 2 weeks ago never even got a bite.

I was using a bait caster, 12 lb. P line , 1/4 shaky head, with 7.0" rod heavy action.

I am switching to 7.2" Med Heavy fast action, 10 lb P line.

I think with the longer rod with Med Heavy, and 10 lb line I will be able to feel the bottom better along with the fish. If this setup does not give me what I want I will switch again till I find a combo that works best for me.

Have a 7' Med rod and found to have better feel and hook ups with it. More sensitive than the Med heavy. Can get better light action from the medium also. After I get things paid for, including James H., I might get a Med light. MIGHT. But still use 12lb line tho.

Exactly. Just saying that I have better luck with lighter rod.
