I have the 13 Fishing Omen Black with a new Abu Revo SX, (got spoiled for Xmas this year). So far I like the rod even though I haven't caught any fish on it yet. The guides are pretty cool but not sure how they'll do over time. It's really light weight, has good balance to it and very easy to cast. If it wasn't on sale, I would have never even considered putting out the $240 for it.

I did see a fishing show this weekend talking about tackle warehouse having some kind of try it before you buy it program. Said they send you the item and you try it for a week. If you don't like it, send it back. If you do like it, that's when you buy it. Might be something for you to check out, as well as me to.

I remember what show now! It was Jarrett Edwards! He was the one talking about the try it before you buy it program from tackle warehouse.

Rods are all on preference.  Honestly,  I used to love Veritas rods. They went to **** imo.  Mass produce something and that tends to happen.  There are great rods out there.  Lews line of rods are nicely made and work for a lot of peoples budget.  As far as custom rods go.  You need to see what you like best before you pull the trigger.  They tend to get expensive and unless your fishing high venues they aren't really needed.  Reels.  This is another thing that goes under the opinion category and what you like yourself.  I love revo's and I love Lews Speed.  That being said.  There is nothing wrong with shimano or daiwa.  It is all a preference.  Like stated above black max/silver max along with the laser speed reels are great reels.  Find what you like and gradually build on it.

As Derrick said Harris is a GRASS lake.  Probably my favorite lake outside of Tillery here in NC.  Summer time you can go deep, but remember the grass ;).. some big girls will not leave it.

Anyway, Go fishing with someone and test out their gear ... see what you like.  Good luck and welcome to NC .. you will enjoy Sandhills Bass Club.  Great group of guys!

Sorry but read it wrong, (bad lighting). My 13 fishing rod is actually an Envy.

Thanks for the input everyone. I took advantage of Gander Mountain's sale/rebate deal today and picked up a new Speed Spool LFS for ~$80 rather than the $100+ they are normally. 7.5:1 ratio so I can use it for my flippin/pitchin rod to take up slack quickly and fish a bit faster if need be. I took a good look at the 13 Fishing Omen Black rods while I was there as well. They seem to be good quality and I think they will be worth picking up one to give it a full on test drive. Tacklewarehouse unfortunately doesn't have the demo program for the rods so I will have to bite the bullet on the Omen.

I am heading into Charlotte on Wednesday so I can take the Secret Service entrance exam (looking at a possible career change) so I am planning on taking some time to check out Lake Tillery since I had never even heard of there until finding the club here. I won't be able to get on the water (still only have my canoe) so if anyone knows of some spots that I can get down to the shore relatively easy I could use the intel. Maybe I can find one or two close enough to the shore for a little fun before I head in to Charlotte. Thanks again everyone.

Tillerys bank access is next to 0. Other than the ramps, everything around the lake has houses on it. Don't mean to put a damper on your plans but that's just the truth. You could probably fish the bridge at the Swift Island ramp from the bank, might be your best bet.
