Thank you guys for your support and for making this club more than just collecting a paycheck. I hope I have been able to help you guys out some, because I know you guys have helped me out. I just wanted to let you guys know that this means a lot to me. I care about this club and the members, and it is truly an honor to be awarded this title.
I think my biggest advice and lessons learned this year is this:
Its okay to fish what your comfortable with but you must learn to adapt. The same pattern won't hold up day to day and tournament to tournament. Apply basic lake specific/time of year principles to the day at hand and go from there. I started the year with jerkbaits and ended with spinnerbaits. During the summer when fish were not schooling I slowed down with bottom fishing worms, and when time of year dictated I went back to moving baits. Just listen to what the fish are saying, if you are not getting bit, change it up. There are many techniques I don't like and/or not comfortable with....carolina rig is one but it paid off this year for me. I fished wood a lot this year too but I used a lot of different lures to fish it: Jig, Spinnerbait, Squarebill, shakey head, texas rig. Back off the bank when you have too. I fished a lot of tournaments this year where I didn't catch a fish in less than 10 feet of water.
I still make this mistake, but don't force a bite...they won't bite if they are not there. If your beating the bank up for hours on end, make a move out deeper.....or fish different cover......or fish more fish prone areas (fish in the wind, not wind protected areas)....or totally change your bait (bigger/smaller/slower/faster/higher or lower water column).
I can attribute my success this year to the following lures/techniques/products:
Carolina Rig
Zoom Ultravibe Speed Worm
Super Sniper Fluorocarbon Line
Spinnerbait
Green Pumpkin Jig
Topwater Popper
Senko
DT 20/8XD Crankbaits in shad colors
Really just basic stuff here. Most of my fish have come off the above lures. A few here and there have been off something different...mainly due to junk fishing but i'd say 80% came from these.
Finally, just don't give up mentally.
